Every year, I am asked
repeatedly why Ameripaca doesnt ever put a Big Gun proven
herdsire in the Breeders Choice Auction. This year,
by popular demand, we have. Our Big Gun is Gunsmoke!
Gunsmoke is a full
Peruvian charcoal grey suri, sired by 5Peruvian Condor. Even
after six shearings his fleece grows back in consistent locks,
evident at a very short staple length. From a distance, Gunsmoke
appears to be bay black, but on closer inspection he has smokey
grey locks uniformly over his body. He exhibits a strong suri
phenotype from his wedge shaped muzzle and well locked topknot
to his upright carriage and straight topline.
Gunsmoke is most famous
for his offspring. He is well known for producing greys, appaloosas
and unusual color patterns. In fact, out of his sixty offspring,
thirty percent are grey or appaloosa. Often, his crias are
born brown or fawn and turn grey around weaning age. Many
of Gunsmokes grey offspring are out of white females.
Waiting for Gunsmoke cria each year is like a treasure hunt,
you never know what color youll get, but its sure
to be beautiful!
Gunsmoke offspring
are often at the head of the class in the show ring. He has
many Champions. His offspring certainly stand out in a crowd
and also sell very quickly.
Gunsmoke is a prepotent
male. He settles females on a single breeding 80% of the time
and on one or two breedings 90% of the time. These statistics
were based on 60 breedings done Ameripaca! Many of these females
were breeding unsuccessfully to other males and were switched
to Gunsmoke because he could "get the job done".
It is with mixed emotions
that we offer Gunsmoke for sale. He has a lot of personality
and takes his job seriously – well miss him guarding
the front fenceline! Hes been a great producer for Ameripaca
and I expect well be buying some breedings to him! Why
are we selling him? We wanted to bring a very high quality
proven male to the auction and Gunsmokes offspring are
a testimony to his quality. As the old adage says, "The proof
is in the pudding!"
