So why did Ameripaca offer fewer lots in the 2004 Breeder's Choice Auction?
As a co-founding farm in the Breeder's Choice Auction, Ameripaca has always had the goal to offer at least 25 of our finest alpacas. Unfortunately this year, the other half of the lots we held specifically for this auction were stranded in Canada! We were holding a certain number of our lots at a colleague's farm to avoid having to shear them during Maryland's humid summer. Then last year, the USDA closed the Canadian border temporarily due to a mad cow disease incident elsewhere in the country. Our alpacas in Canada were never affected, but until the border reopens to the transfer of livestock, our alpacas cannot come home!

Since we did not want to risk having to pull them from the auction if the border doesn't open in time, we decided to just reduce our number for this year. Rest assured, we are fully vested members in the Breeder's Choice and are proud participants. After all, we helped create it!
